Levels of teaching

Levels of teaching are very important in deciding the teaching-learning strategies, and they help a teacher to understand the level of teaching activity. Teaching-learning processes are mainly for students and to make understanding of the related topic wherever it is being taught in the class. It is important for a teacher to understand the level of students so he/she can teach as per their standard in order to deliver significant knowledge. Therefore a teacher must have understanding about at what level he/she is teaching; it also helps him/her to fulfill instructional objectives. Levels of teaching are categorized as follows:

  1. Memory level of teaching
  2. Understanding level of teaching
  3. Reflective level of teaching

MEMORY LEVEL

  1. Developed by Herbert
  2. Initial stage of learning
  3. Influenced by rote learning
  4. Based on stimulus response
  5. It is all about retaining learning and rapid learning
  6. Stability in learning is important for child (this level retain this for sure)
  7. Evaluation is mainly done orally, in writing, and by essay-type questions.

UNDERSTANDING LEVEL

  1. Developed by Morrison
  2. Include theory understanding
  3. Generalization
  4. Learning by insight
  5. Includes memory and insight (understanding)
  6. The understanding capabilities are developed of a student
  7. Assimilation of knowledge is important
  8. Evaluation is done by short-answer-type-questions and by essay-type questions and sometimes objective-type questions are also asked to built the understanding of students

REFLECTIVE LEVEL

  1. Developed by Hunt
  2. It is the highest level of teaching and based on memory level and understanding level
  3. It is a problem-centric approach
  4. It follows an open and independent classroom environment, which is very important for idea to come in the minds of students
  5. Students can develop their own point of view through this level if they are active in the classroom
  6. Mastery of subject is done by this level
  7. Develop a deep understanding of theory, facts and any ideas
  8. Students also develop the application of their knowledge to outer life
  9. Evaluation is done by the essay-type question, open ideas, participation, and sometimes by the attitude and beliefs of students
  10. The teaching process follow the curriculum
  11. Students are at the primary level, while the teacher is at the second level.
